Who can enter?

This competition is intended for those training in welding. Competitors should be working towards award body courses and / or service courses. The competition is open to the following levels:

Advanced: Those undertaking qualifications up to level 3 or up to five years experience in a working environment.

About the competition

The competition is designed and judged to meet employers expectations and requirements that apply throughout the industry. It tests a competitor’s performance in a selection of tasks drawn from the welder’s role at BS EN 287 (or equivalent) level.

The tasks will include:

  • The interpretation of welding procedures and instructions
  • Equipment set up
  • Final preparation of welding joint geometries in carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium
  • The completion of a defined weld in the above materials.

Subject to demand, there will be one-day regional heats held at regional centres across the UK, followed by a three day UK final held at TWI at Gt. Abington near Cambridge.

Competition structure

Stage one: enter the competition by 1 December 2009
Stage two: competitors will be invited to participate in a live heat.
Stage three: highest scoring competitors across all heats that meet the required standard will be invited to compete at the UK final.

How many competitors can enter from each organisation?

There are no restrictions on how many competitors can be entered into the regional competition from each organisation.
